Windows provides network administrators with a set of scripts and command line utilities to automate the installation and configuration of network printers. Network administrators can incorporate these commands into batch files that they then push out as login scripts for user groups or to specific computers. The Windows executable that accomplishes this task is called 'printui.dll' and it is used in conjunction with the 'PrintUIEntry' command to manage printer functions on the command line.

Click on Start and type 'cmd' in the search tool to open the command line window.

Type 'rundll32 printui.dll PrintUIEntry /in /n MyComputerPrinterName' where the switch '/in' connects to the remote computer and '/n' specifies the name of the computer to which the printer is attached. In this example, the printer is attached to 'MyComputer.' press the 'Enter' key.

Click on Start, Control Panel and then 'Devices and Printers.' Verify that the Network printer exists under 'Printers.'

Tips

PrintUIEntry is a case-sensitive keyword that must be entered on the command line as referenced.
You can add a printer for a group of users by substituting the switch '/in' with '/ga' where '/ga' adds a per computer printer connections for network users.
